In a scathing statement released today, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) voiced strong disapproval of the coalition government’s decision, comprised of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC), to vote against establishing an ad hoc committee aimed at investigating allegations of extortion in both public and private sectors. The EFF condemned this move as a blatant disregard for transparency and accountability, severely undermining efforts to combat corruption in South Africa.

The proposed ad hoc committee, intended to examine various extortion cases that have emerged in recent months, garnered substantial support from opposition parties, who emphasized the necessity of such investigations to restore public trust in government institutions. However, the coalition’s rejection of the motion has sparked concerns regarding the integrity of the ruling parties and their commitment to tackling systemic corruption.

EFF leader Julius Malema criticized the coalition’s decision, stating, “This decision is a clear indication that the DA and ANC are not interested in uncovering the truth. Instead, they prefer to protect their interests and those of the corrupt elites implicated in extortion scandals.” He urged the public to hold these parties accountable and demand greater transparency in governance.

The EFF’s statement further underscored specific extortion cases that have surfaced recently, asserting that the failure to investigate these issues not only harms victims but also perpetuates a culture of impunity among corrupt officials. The party reaffirmed its commitment to fighting corruption and called on civil society and other stakeholders to unite in demanding governmental reform.

As the political landscape in South Africa continues to shift, the EFF’s bold stance against the DA-ANC coalition could galvanize public sentiment and ignite renewed calls for accountability. The EFF pledged to pursue alternative strategies to ensure that investigations into extortion are not ignored, stressing the necessity for a robust and independent inquiry into the matter.
