Gauteng ANC chairperson Panyaza Lesufi has responded to recent remarks by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, who issued a firm “warning” to party members about the importance of discipline and unity. Speaking at a press briefing, Lesufi acknowledged Mbalula’s concerns but emphasized that the Gauteng ANC remains committed to cohesion and alignment with national directives as the 2024 general elections approach.

Mbalula had recently cautioned ANC members about divisive behavior and public criticism of the party’s leadership, urging provincial leaders to prioritize unity. He warned that the national executive would not tolerate factionalism or disloyalty from any structures, a statement seen by many as an attempt to curb internal dissent ahead of the crucial elections.

In his response, Lesufi underscored the importance of maintaining discipline but highlighted that open dialogue within the party should not be viewed as disloyalty. “We respect the secretary-general’s position and his warning. However, we believe that constructive engagement and internal discussions are not signs of disloyalty but necessary for building a stronger ANC,” Lesufi stated.

Lesufi also assured that the Gauteng ANC remains focused on delivering its mandate and preparing for the elections. “Our priority is to respond to the needs of the people and ensure a successful election campaign. As the Gauteng leadership, we are committed to working closely with national structures, including the secretary-general’s office,” he added.

Lesufi’s remarks come at a time when tensions between national and provincial ANC structures often emerge, particularly as regional leaders balance local concerns with national priorities. His response appeared to assert the autonomy of the Gauteng ANC while reaffirming loyalty to the broader party agenda. Analysts view this as a strategic move to project confidence and independence without directly challenging Mbalula’s authority.

Mbalula’s warning highlights the ANC’s focus on restoring unity and discipline following years of factional infighting, which have weakened its electoral support. Gauteng, as a critical battleground province, is under pressure to perform well in the upcoming elections, making Lesufi’s leadership a key factor in the party’s success.

While Lesufi’s comments suggest a desire to maintain stability within the party, some observers believe that differences between the national and Gauteng leadership could resurface as the elections draw closer. For now, his measured response reflects a preference for cooperation rather than confrontation within the ANC.
