In a dramatic twist within the African National Congress (ANC), Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is reportedly strategizing to unseat President Cyril Ramaphosa. Sources close to the political landscape indicate that Lesufi aims to reshape the power dynamics within the ANC, potentially leading to the replacement of Fikile Mbalula as Secretary General.

Lesufi, recognized for his assertive leadership and growing influence within the party, is rallying support from key factions disillusioned with Ramaphosa’s governance. Insiders suggest that his plan may involve bringing back former President Jacob Zuma, whose controversial presidency has left a lasting impact on South Africa’s political environment. The return of Zuma could significantly shift the party’s direction, reviving discussions surrounding corruption and governance that marked his time in office.

In addition to Zuma, Lesufi is reportedly eyeing a partnership with Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Although such an alliance may seem unlikely given their historical rivalry, political analysts believe it could serve as a strategic maneuver to consolidate power and attract a broader voter base. A coalition with Malema might resonate particularly well with younger voters and those disenchanted by the current ANC leadership.

Critics caution that Lesufi’s ambitions could deepen the divisions within the already fractured ANC, raising concerns about the party’s stability as South Africa approaches the upcoming elections. With the nation grappling with significant socio-economic challenges, including high unemployment and rising inflation, presenting a united front will be crucial for the ANC’s electoral prospects.

As Lesufi prepares for this political showdown, all eyes will be on how the current leadership reacts and whether he can garner the necessary support to implement his ambitious agenda. The implications of these developments could extend beyond party politics, potentially reshaping South Africa’s future in significant ways.
