ANC KZN Secretary Questions Solly Mapaila’s Commitment to Communism, Sparking Tension with SACP

ANC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Secretary Bheki Mtolo has raised doubts about the ideological alignment of South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary Solly Mapaila, casting a shadow over the unity between the historically allied ANC and SACP. Speaking at a recent ANC KZN event, Mtolo openly questioned whether Mapaila truly embodies communist principles, stating, “I doubt if Solly Mapaila is a communist,” in a pointed critique of the SACP leader’s approach.

Mtolo’s remarks come at a time when the long-standing alliance between the ANC and SACP faces increasing strain. Under Mapaila’s leadership, the SACP has grown more vocal in its criticism of the ANC, particularly on issues of economic transformation, social justice, and governance. This divergence in policy views has caused friction between the two parties, which, along with COSATU, form the Tripartite Alliance that has shaped South African politics for decades.

By questioning Mapaila’s commitment to communist values, Mtolo highlights a growing rift within the leftist factions of South African politics. His statement suggests that some within the ANC believe the SACP, under Mapaila, may be drifting away from its revolutionary ideals, leading to tensions over the direction of the alliance.

In response, SACP insiders have defended Mapaila, insisting that his leadership is firmly grounded in communist ideals and that his critiques of the ANC are motivated by a desire to hold the government accountable to its socialist roots. They argue that the SACP’s critical stance is aimed at pushing the ANC to remain true to its promises of economic equality and social justice. While the SACP has not yet issued an official response to Mtolo’s remarks, the incident has underscored the ideological and strategic differences that have emerged under Mapaila’s leadership.

This development could deepen the rift between the ANC and SACP, raising questions about the future of their alliance. With tensions escalating, many are left wondering whether the ideological foundations that once united these political organizations can withstand the growing divisions.
