**Police Sergeant Faces Charges of Murder and Fraud, Court Postpones Bail Hearing**

Sergeant Rachel Shokoane-Kutumela appeared in the Polokwane District Court on Friday, where her case was postponed to October 18 for a possible bail application.

Shokoane-Kutumela, aged 43, was arrested on Thursday after reporting for duty at the Senwabarwana police station, located outside Polokwane. She faces a total of eleven counts of fraud, six counts of murder, and two counts of defeating the ends of justice.

According to Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Limpopo, the state is confident in its case and plans to oppose her bail application.

“We are handling this case under Schedule 6, which means it involves premeditation or planning,” Malabi-Dzhangi explained outside the court. “The responsibility is on her to prove if there are exceptional circumstances that could justify her release on bail.”

Shokoane-Kutumela is accused of murdering six individuals to collect insurance payouts, estimated at around R10 million, from various service providers, including ABSA, Standard Bank, Capitec, Hollard, Assupol, Old Mutual, Onelife, and Clientele, where she was listed as the sole beneficiary.

Her alleged crimes began in October 2019 with the killing of Sydney Noko Montja, followed by the murder of Joyce Tsela Malesa in July 2020, and Navel Kutumela in April 2021. Maphari Ephraim Chosi was killed in August 2021, Jacob Petrus Seakamela in September 2022, and Phuti Martin Mothata in April 2024.
