In a heartbreaking incident that has stunned the Naledi Extension community in Soweto, four children tragically died after allegedly consuming snacks purchased from a local spaza shop. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, 6 October 2024, involved five children aged between six and nine. While four of the children lost their lives, the fifth remains in critical condition at a hospital.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths. “The cause of death is not yet known and is currently under police investigation,” Nevhuhulwi stated. The community is in deep mourning as they await clarity on what led to this devastating event.

The tragedy has raised serious concerns about food safety and the regulation of products sold in local stores. Parents and guardians have been urged to be extra cautious about the snacks their children consume, especially from informal vendors.

This incident has also drawn attention to the need for stricter food safety enforcement and regular inspections of spaza shops to ensure that all products sold are safe for consumption. The community is calling on authorities to act swiftly in addressing these concerns.

As investigations continue, the residents of Naledi Extension are left grappling with grief, hoping for a thorough inquiry that will prevent future tragedies. The loss of these young lives serves as a painful reminder of the critical importance of food safety and the need for vigilance to protect children.
