Former Western Cape High Court Judge President, John Hlophe has been barred from taking up a seat on the Judicial Service Commission. Judgement was handed down a short while ago by Judge Johannes Daffue in the Western Cape High court.

On Friday, the Western Cape High Court handed down its judgment in an application the DA and Freedom Under Law had lodged for his recusal from the JSC.

The DA submitted that it deemed it irrational for Hlophe, the first judge to be removed from the Bench in democratic South Africa, to be a part of the body that interviews judges for vacancies and disciplines members of the judiciary.

He was sworn in as an MP for the MKP in June, and is a leader of the opposition in the same National Assembly that removed him.
