The Government of National Unity (GNU) is facing a potential collapse, as stated by the Democratic Alliance (DA), who is seeking a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa before the scheduled signing of the BELA Bill into law on Friday.
The DA expressed disappointment in Ramaphosa’s decision to sign the bill in its current state, labeling it as “defective” and insisting on modifications before enactment. Although the specific amendments the DA seeks remain unspecified, the party issued a warning of severing ties with the GNU if Ramaphosa proceeds with signing. Once a bill receives approval from both the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and the National Legislature (Parliament of the
Republic of South Africa), the president holds the authority to sign it if deemed appropriate. The President’s response to the DA’s demands remains uncertain, as it is uncertain whether he will comply with the request or exercise his presidential prerogative.
