Polokwane, Limpopo – A suspected illicit cigarette smuggler was fatally shot, and three others were arrested following a high-speed chase with police outside Polokwane on Saturday. The incident highlights the ongoing battle against the illegal tobacco trade in the region.
The chase ensued after law enforcement officers, acting on a tip-off, attempted to intercept a convoy of vehicles believed to be transporting contraband cigarettes. The suspects, realizing they were being pursued, reportedly accelerated, leading police on a tense chase along the R71 highway.
As the suspects tried to evade capture, they allegedly fired shots at the pursuing officers, prompting the police to return fire. The confrontation culminated in a shootout that left one of the suspected smugglers dead. The other three suspects, who were unharmed, were swiftly apprehended and taken into custody.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the spokesperson for the Limpopo SAPS, confirmed the incident, stating that the police were acting on intelligence regarding the illegal transportation of cigarettes into South Africa. “The suspects were flagged after officers received credible information about the illicit activity. The suspects chose to engage in a dangerous high-speed chase, which tragically ended in the loss of life,” Mojapelo said.
Upon inspecting the vehicles, police discovered a substantial quantity of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value running into millions of rands. The contraband has been seized, and the vehicles involved in the smuggling operation have been impounded as part of the ongoing investigation.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court soon, where they will face charges including possession of illicit goods, attempted murder, and resisting arrest.
This incident underscores the continued efforts by South African law enforcement to clamp down on the illegal cigarette trade, which has been linked to organized crime and significant tax revenue losses. The police have vowed to intensify their operations to curb the smuggling of illicit goods into the country.
The identities of the deceased and the arrested suspects have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
