Three hijacking suspects were killed in a shootout with police in Umlazi, south of Durban, following a high-speed chase. This incident is part of a series of similar events in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where 17 suspected criminals have been killed by law enforcement in less than two weeks.
The police action has received mixed reactions, with some praising the efforts to combat crime and others questioning the implications for investigations and the disproportionate impact on certain communities.
A hijacked Hyundai i10 was spotted in Umlazi’s R-Section a short while ago. The suspects threw the victim out of the car and raced off. Members from SAPS Umlazi detective branch, Umlazi Vispol, Fidelity SIU, ATS Security and Mshazi Security pursued the Hyundai. They allegedly came under attack and returned fire, killing the suspects.
