An elderly man was killed after his car ploughed through the parking area of a multi-storey mall in Overport, Durban, on Thursday.
Garrith Jamieson, ALS Paramedics spokesperson, said when paramedics arrived at the scene on Overport Drive just before 12.30 pm, they found that a vehicle had crashed through the parking wall of a shopping centre and landed on its roof on the road below.
Jamieson said the driver, believed to be in his seventies, was severely entrapped in the wreckage and had suffered major injuries.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, he said nothing could be done to save the man, and he was declared deceased at the scene.
The Ethekweni Fire Department, SAPS, and Metro Police Search and Rescue unit worked together to use the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to extricate the man from the vehicle.
The circumstances leading up to the crash are currently unknown and are being investigated by SAPS.
