Former South African President Jacob Zuma has long been a controversial figure in his country, but recent events have brought renewed attention to his legacy. One of the most damning accusations against Zuma is that he has blood on his hands – quite literally.
On October 20, 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission released a scathing report detailing the role Zuma played in the Marikana massacre of 2012. The massacre occurred when police opened fire on striking miners at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana, killing 34 people and injuring 78 others. The report found that Zuma, as the head of state at the time, failed to take decisive action to prevent the tragedy from unfolding.
The report also implicated Zuma in the deaths of over 300 psychiatric patients in Gauteng province in 2016. The patients died after being transferred from Life Esidimeni healthcare facilities to unlicensed and ill-equipped NGOs. The report concluded that Zuma’s government was responsible for the lack of oversight that led to these deaths.
These revelations have sparked outrage across South Africa, with many calling for Zuma to be held accountable for his actions. The families of the victims of both the Marikana massacre and the Life Esidimeni tragedy are demanding justice and closure.
Zuma, for his part, has denied any wrongdoing and has accused the Human Rights Commission of being biased against him. He has also pointed to his efforts to improve the lives of South Africans during his time in office, including expanding access to healthcare and education.
Despite his protestations, the evidence against Zuma is mounting. The blood of those who died needlessly under his watch continues to stain his legacy, tarnishing what was once a promising political career.
As South Africa grapples with the aftermath of these tragedies, the spotlight remains firmly on Zuma and the role he played in these horrific events. Only time will tell if justice will be served and if those responsible for these senseless deaths will be held to account.
