Taxi boss Mfundo Gcaba deposited R800 000 into a bank account of one of the men charged with the murder of rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes.

This was revealed by the State as the bail application of the five men accused of killing AKA continued at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 27 March.

State prosecutor advocate Elvis Gcweka read into the record the affidavit of the investigation officer Warrant Officer Kumarasan Pillay.

Gcweka told the court that before the money was deposited on 11 February, Gwabeni made a call to a number linked to Sydney Mfundo Gcaba. The money was paid by a company called Bright Circle which Gcaba owns.

The owner of Gwabs Mining then shared the money with his co-accused who each received just over R100 000.

“Shorty after this call, an amount of R803 455 was transferred to the bank account of the applicant (Gwabeni). The bank statements are attached to his affidavit but not showing the period of these transactions. The money was transferred from a bank account of the company Bright Circle,” Gcweka told the court.

WHO IS SYDNEY MFUNDO GCABA?

  • Mfundo is one of the Gcaba brothers from the feared Gcaba family in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal that runs a taxi empire.
  • It has been widely reported that he is former President Jacob Zuma’s nephew.
  • In 2015, Gcaba owned 24 taxis which earned him about R400 000 a month at the time.
  • According to the State in the AKA murder case, Mfundo is the sole director of Bright Circle which paid Gwabeni for “consultation services”.
