In a tragic incident that deeply affected the community, 23-year-old Onthatile Sebati and her two cousins, Tumelo and Kagiso Mokone, were recently found guilty in the Pretoria high court for the shocking murders of Sebati’s family members. The victims included her father, police constable Solomon Lucky Sebati, mother Mmatshepo, a nurse at an old-age home, her 19-year-old pregnant sister Tshegofatso, and her young brother Quinton.

The disturbing plot, hatched when Sebati was just 15 years old, unfolded in December 2016 at their home in Mmakau near Brits in the North West. The family tragically lost their lives, shot dead with Sebati’s father’s service pistol.

A distressing turn in the story emerged during the court proceedings, revealing that Sebati allegedly paid her cousins R100,000 from the insurance payouts she received after the gruesome murders. The trio faced multiple charges, including murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, and theft.

Judge Mashudu Munzhelele, overseeing the case, unequivocally rejected the defense put forth by the accused, delivering a guilty verdict on all counts. The courtroom atmosphere was solemn as the three individuals, heads bowed, confronted the weight of the judgment.

The sentencing has been postponed to April 16, 17, and 19, providing time for the preparation of a pre-sentencing report. This delay underscores the court’s commitment to a thorough examination of the case before determining the appropriate consequences for these reprehensible crimes.

This tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the crucial need for vigilance in identifying potential signs of distress within families and communities, emphasizing the collective responsibility we all share for the well-being of those around us.

Onthatile Sebati, 23, and her two cousins were found guilty in the Pretoria high court on Wednesday of murdering her father, mother, eight months pregnant sister and young brother.
