On August 2, the Ga-Rankuwa Regional Court in Tshwane witnessed a grim incident when the suspect, Johannes Jojo Shabangu, aged 35, took his own life while in detention. Shabangu had recently entered a guilty plea to 14 counts of rape and 11 counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, admitting to a series of crimes that occurred between July 2012 and December 2019 in Winterveldt, Tshwane.

During the court proceedings, Shabangu pleaded guilty to his heinous acts, shocking the court and his victims who were present. While the judge and the jury were on a break, he suddenly lost consciousness and became unwell in the holding cell. The presiding judge, Andre Peterson, confirmed that Shabangu had been found guilty on all charges based on his guilty plea statement.

The court session was scheduled to include victim impact statements before a sentence could be passed. However, due to Shabangu’s health condition, the proceedings were postponed to August 3, 2023, to allow him to receive medical attention.

In a tragic turn of events, the paramedics on the scene pronounced Shabangu dead, and the presiding judge officially declared the proceedings over. A death certificate was issued, and the matter was referred to the registrar of the High Court of South’s North West Division for further investigation. An inquest docket was initiated to determine the cause of his death.

Shabangu’s crimes involved vicious assaults on women, often perpetrated with unknown accomplices. The attacks targeted couples returning home from entertainment venues, where the victims were threatened with firearms, violently robbed, and subjected to multiple instances of rape.

The successful prosecution of the suspect received commendations from various officials, including the Director of Public Prosecutions for the North West, Dr. Rachel Makhari, and the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena. Advocate Nangomso Goloda and Sergeant Molwantoa Rapakgadi were also praised for their invaluable contribution in gathering evidence that led to the apprehension and prosecution of the serial rapist and robber.

Though the suspect’s passing may bring some sense of closure to his victims, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of such heinous crimes on individuals and communities. The case stands as a testament to the dedication and determination of law enforcement and legal authorities to bring justice to those affected by such acts of violence.
