Phindile Gwala is married to Armando Ngandu, who is a citizen of the Congo.
On social media, there has been a lot of debate over the growing number of South African female celebrities who are marrying men from other countries, but no one can seem to agree on why this trend is occurring. What are the reasons for this happening? Is it possible that men in South Africa simply do not understand how to behave around women? If this is occurring, could it be that men from other African countries have physical characteristics that guys from South Africa do not have, or might it just be a coincidence?
Even though it takes a foreigner at least 5 years to gain citizenship in South Africa even after he or she has married a South African, some people claim that foreigners marry Mzansi’s celebrities because they want visas. This is despite the fact that it takes at least 5 years for a foreigner to gain citizenship in South Africa. The way I see it, we need to come to terms with the idea that love has no boundaries, not even those of language, culture, or the way a person appears physically. We need to do this as soon as possible. It shouldn’t matter if a South African marries someone from outside the country as long as the couple is content and the marriage makes sense to both of them. To put it more simply, they are head over heels in love with one another.
If we continue to see each other as distinct individuals, we will never be able to put a stop to bigotry of any kind, including racism, tribalism, and xenophobia. Because Africans have a lot to gain from one other, especially when they are united, and because men in South Africa should take notes instead of bickering, if men in other African countries treat women better than men in Mzansi, then men in South Africa should do the same.
