Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka has assumed the role of South Africa’s new Public Protector. Her appointment has raised questions due to her association with Cyril Ramaphosa concerning the Phala Phala scandal. Some claim that her relationship with political allies has negated the necessity for a formal vote, suggesting external influences at play.

The unresolved Phala Phala issue may resurface when Julius Malema takes the helm. There’s an anticipation that her removal process may commence soon, as people are unwilling to repeat past experiences with previous Public Protectors. The public is becoming increasingly frustrated with the ANC’s actions, and there’s a belief that Gcaleka’s appointment is a reward for protecting the President in the Phalaphala Farm Gate money laundering case.

The election of Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka as the Public Protector took place in Cape Town City Hall, a significant location where Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane was previously impeached for misconduct and incompetence. Mkhwebane’s removal marked a historic event, as she was the first head of a Chapter 9 institution to be ousted. Her term would have naturally concluded on 14 October had she not been removed.

There are differing opinions on Gcaleka’s appointment, with some asserting that her selection may have been influenced by political considerations, aiming to secure protection for the ANC if they lose the upcoming elections. Concerns are growing regarding recent questionable deals.
