SASSA Grants Increase: What You Need to Know

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government agency that provides social assistance to eligible citizens. SASSA grants are monthly payments that help people who are in need of financial support, such as older persons, people with disabilities, children, foster parents, war veterans, and caregivers. SASSA grants are funded by the national budget and are adjusted annually according to inflation and other factors.

As of 1 October 2023, SASSA has made a marginal increase to all grants, except for the child support grant top-up, which remains at R250. This means that in just one year, the grants have increased by R100, after a R90 increase was implemented on 1 April 2023. For example, the child support grant was R480 in October 2022, and as of today, it is R510.

The increase to all major grants is as follows:

– Older Persons Grant: Recipients aged between 60 and 70 will receive R2090, up from R2080.

– Older Persons Grant: Recipients aged over 75 will receive R2110, up from R2100.

– Disability Grant: Recipients will receive R2090, up from R2080.

– Child Support Grant: Recipients will receive R510, up from R500.

– Foster Child Grant: Recipients will receive R1130, up from R1120.

– Care Dependency Grant: Recipients will receive R2090, up from R2080.

– War Veterans Grant: Recipients will receive R2110, up from R2100.

– Grant-In-Aid: Recipients will receive R510, up from R500.

SASSA grant beneficiaries can expect to receive their payouts a little early this month. SASSA and Postbank have assured beneficiaries that they will receive their monies as expected. The payment dates for October are as follows:

– Older Persons/ Pensioners Grant: Tuesday, 3 October.

– Disability Grant: Wednesday, 4 October.

– All other Grants: Thursday, 5 October.

SASSA grants are an important source of income for many South Africans who are living in poverty or facing hardships. The increase in the grants is a welcome relief for many beneficiaries who struggle to make ends meet. However, some critics argue that the increase is too little and does not keep up with the rising cost of living. They also point out that the grant system is plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and fraud. They call for more reforms and accountability in the administration of the grants.

SASSA grants are a vital social safety net for millions of South Africans. They provide dignity and hope to those who need it most. By increasing the grants, SASSA aims to improve the quality of life and well-being of its beneficiaries. However, there is still room for improvement and innovation in the delivery and management of the grants. SASSA should continue to work with its partners and stakeholders to ensure that the grants reach their intended recipients and achieve their intended outcomes.
