The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) CLU unit has reportedly arrested two Tshwane Metro Police officers and their partner following a truck hijacking incident on the R21.
According to reports, the EMPD officers were on patrol along the R21 when they spotted a truck that had been stopped by a grey BMW 3 series. The BMW was not displaying any police markings, and the officers became suspicious.
The officers conducted a vehicle check on the BMW and discovered that it had been reported stolen. They then approached the occupants of the BMW, who were the two Tshwane Metro Police officers and an accomplice.
The three suspects fled the scene in the BMW, but the EMPD officers gave chase. The chase ended when the BMW was abandoned along the R21. The suspects were then apprehended by the EMPD officers with the assistance of GDOCS and SAPS choppers.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the truck driver was abducted by the suspects and dropped off in the Bapsfontein area. The driver was later taken to Olifantsfontein SAPS to open a case.
The three suspects have been charged with truck hijacking and possession of stolen goods. They are being held in custody at the Olifantsfontein SAPS and are expected to appear in court soon.
The EMPD has commended the swift action of its officers in apprehending the suspects. The EMPD has also vowed to continue working with other law enforcement agencies to crack down on crime in the Gauteng City Region.
