Yesterday afternoon, on August 23, 2023, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team carried out the apprehension of a 49-year-old woman and her 20-year-old son in Klerksdorp, on charges of alleged corruption.

The incident traces back to January 2023 when the suspect purportedly approached a service provider in Klerksdorp, assuming the role of the chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) within the local municipality. According to reports, the complainant was instructed by the woman to notify her when municipal tenders were up for advertisement. She apparently indicated that she would take appropriate action.

Subsequently, in March 2023, the suspect reportedly engaged in a meeting with the complainant, during which she allegedly disclosed that the complainant’s business partner had successfully secured a municipal tender for waste collection. Adding to the intrigue, she supposedly indicated her awareness that the complainant had leased his trucks to his business partner, further implicating him in the tender’s benefits.

The situation took a dark turn when the complainant was allegedly confronted with an ultimatum: pay the suspect an amount of R100,000 or face the termination of the contract, with no possibility of renewal.

Acting on information concerning a payment arrangement between the suspect and the complainant, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team swiftly intervened. Following a cash payment of R30,000 by the complainant, both the suspect and her son were taken into custody. The charges leveled against them encompass allegations of corruption. Their court appearance is scheduled for tomorrow, August 24, 2023, at the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court.

This incident underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law within the community.
