L’vaughn Fisher, a 25-year-old infantryman who was assaulted by members of the police’s VIP protection unit last weekend, is suing the police service for one million rand, according to his attorney.
The South African National Defense Force (SANDF) has allegedly forbidden the motorists assaulted by the police’s VIP unit on the N1 in Johannesburg from speaking about the incident unless a general is present.
This is according to Action Society, a civil organization representing one of the victims in civil litigation against the police.
Ian Cameron of the organization stated in a statement released on Friday that this alleged edict remained “even after hours in their personal capacity.”
The legal representative for Action Society, Danil Eloff, has contested this order, arguing that it violates the victims’ right to freedom of expression.
“In accordance with South African law and the Bill of Rights of the Constitution, the SANDF has no authority to prevent victims or any individual from expressing their views or recounting their experiences outside of work hours and off military premises,” Eloff explained.
“More importantly, one would anticipate the upper echelons of the defense force to support its members in their time of need, as opposed to assisting in the protection of the alleged assailants from the SAPS VIP Unit.
“The truth must be revealed, and the victims have every right to share their experiences with the public.”
Let’s get this straight, shall we? We have “damning footage” depicting the faces of these officers and the assault, yet they have not been charged. Our justice system must once again be on vacation.
Again, they will not bill them. Popcru and SAPI will continue to defend this nonsense, and the Department may simply suspend them for a month and, rather than dismissing them, dispatch them to various police stations.
These are the individuals who are privy to the shady dealings of the high-profile politicians they protect, yet nothing will happen to them; their suspension was just for show, and they are simply biding their time until the scandal passes over.
The legal representatives for some of the victims confirmed that none of the officers have officially been charged, despite damning footage showing their faces and the assault.https://t.co/Ss7HhrsW1y
