The African National Congress (ANC) in the Thabo Mofutsanyana region has called for the suspension of Nketoana Local Municipality mayor Mamiki Mokoena.
Mokoena is accused of failing to present annual reports to the municipality’s council, hiring staff outside the secured budget, and disrespecting and undermining the leadership of the ANC in the region.
The ANC regional secretary, Mojalefa Mohapi, has written a letter to Mokoena, explaining the reasons for the suspension. Mohapi has said that Mokoena has been granted seven days to respond to the letter.
According to Mohapi, Mokoena has failed to present annual reports to the municipality’s council for the past two years. This has made it difficult for the council to track the municipality’s performance and ensure that it is meeting its financial obligations.
Mohapi has also said that Mokoena has hired staff outside the secured budget. This has put the municipality’s finances under strain and has made it difficult for the municipality to deliver essential services to its residents.
In addition, Mohapi has said that Mokoena has disrespected and undermined the leadership of the ANC in the region. This has created a climate of instability and uncertainty in the municipality and has made it difficult for the ANC to effectively govern.
Mokoena has denied the allegations against her. She has said that she will respond to the letter in due course. Meanwhile, the ANC Youth League provincial secretary, Mayibuye Bangani, has also written a letter to Mokoena, expressing concern about the situation.
Bangani has said that some ANC officials have met with Mokoena and instructed her to replace ANC regional executive committee member Tshepo Mofokeng, who is deployed as YDO in the mayor’s office, with a candidate of their own. Bangani has said that this is a violation of the ANC’s constitution and that it should be investigated.
