The biggest earthquake to ever been experienced in South Africa for over 60 years, rocked the country in early mourning hours of Sunday leaving many in fear.

Residents in Heidelberg, Benoni, Boksburg, Alberton and even Pretoria were shaken by the biggest earthquake to hit the region in over 60 years, at 02: 38 am on Sunday. It is reported that this earthquake lasted for about 20 seconds.

People were left terrified, some even took to social media to reveal that their homes were left with cracks, and some objects were falling from their walls. This signifies the intensity of the earthquake.

Several videos are circulating on social media which shows how bad this was. In one of the security videos taken in Benoni, the road could be seen literally shaking as dogs were barking in shock of what was happening.

Some suggest that this earthquake was relatively long as high as 5 magnitude. Reports suggest that it was felt in neighbouring provinces such as Mpumalanga as well. There are speculations that after shocks may follow this incident as several people were left shaken.

Last I check when driving on Rondebult Road heading to East Rand mall, there is a portion we are no longer driving on because apparently there is a sink hole there. I hope this new sink whole which appeared 2-3 months back is not a sign,” said one of the people who shared their experience.

“This quake just taught me that I do not have an evacuation procedure at my house, or an emergency preparedness plan. Yet alone, an emergency exit. Due to security concerns all doors have have burglar bars,” said another citizen.
