Middle-class South Africans are facing significant stress as they grapple with the challenges of repaying vehicle and home loans, resorting to credit cards to make ends meet each month. The recently released Credit Stress Report for the first quarter of 2023, conducted by Eighty20, a consumer analytics and research company, paints a distressing picture for both the middle-class and affluent households in South Africa. The report delves into the credit behavior of four consumer segments, which collectively constitute 78% of all credit-active South Africans and account for 92% of the total loan value.

The first quarter of this year emerges as a particularly challenging period for middle-class South Africans. As debts continue to accumulate and incomes dwindle, this segment finds itself allocating a staggering 70% of their monthly earnings to cover debt repayments. Consequently, there has been a notable increase in defaults among middle-class households, with 21% more debts newly entering default—a concerning rate of 3.4% of the total.

Equally alarming is the impact of these financial stresses on the more affluent market. Even this segment experienced a 23% surge in new defaults, resulting in a default rate of 1.7% of the total debts. Furthermore, the affluent market is burdened by the fact that 60% of their average monthly income is devoted to paying off credit and loans, exacerbating their financial strain.

The findings of the Credit Stress Report highlight the widespread economic pressures faced by both the middle-class and affluent South Africans. As they struggle to keep up with mounting debts and decreasing incomes, these households find themselves grappling to meet their financial obligations. Urgent measures and interventions are needed to alleviate the burden on these segments and foster a more sustainable and prosperous financial landscape for all.
