South Africa has lost one of its most iconic and versatile actors, Patrick Ndlovu, who passed away at the age of 85. Ndlovu was best known for his role as the cruel school headmaster in Yizo Yizo, a groundbreaking show that is now available on Netflix. He also starred in other popular productions such as Zone 14, The Queen and Durban Gen.

His agency announced the tragic news of his sudden death on Tuesday, but the cause of Ndlovu’s passing is still unknown.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor Patrick Ndlovu, whose acting career spanned more than four decades. We were proud to represent such a consummate professional and majestic talent. He was a kind and gentle man, always ready with a smile even when times were tough. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, family, and friends,” reads the statement.

Actress Nambitha Ben-Mazwi wrote: “I was only a young ’un when I was called to fill in the enormous shoes of the inimitable #PatrickNdlovu on #YizoYizo I knew I had much to learn!

“The Queen” actor Vuyolwethu Ngcukana tweeted: “What an honour to have worked with this man, a true professional, gentle, warm and generous, a legend in his own right and an inspiration to many 🕊️💔 #RIPPatrickNdlovu.”

He last played the character of Sizwe Moloi on the SABC 1 drama show Zone 14.

He grew up in Mohlakeng, near Randfontein on the West Rand. Before he became an actor, he was a jazz musician in his teenage years.

Ndlovu’s death has left a huge gap in the entertainment industry, where he was revered for his talent and professionalism. He was also a kind and gentle man who always had a smile on his face. His agency, colleagues and fans have expressed their heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and friends. Ndlovu will be remembered as a legendary actor who touched many lives with his unforgettable performances.
