South Africa – Onkgopotse “JJ” Tabane, a renowned author and host of the popular Newzroom Afrika show “Your View,” recently achieved a significant milestone by earning a doctorate in Media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2022. However, Dr JJ Tabane now finds himself embroiled in controversy as questions arise regarding the legitimacy of his professorship.

Reports have surfaced indicating that JJ Tabane’s professorship has come under scrutiny, leading to calls for an investigation by the University of South Africa (Unisa). Concerns have been raised about how he obtained his professorship and the need to address the awarding of “questionable” professorships to academic staff at the university.

These concerns have stemmed from a report compiled by Prof Themba Mosia, which was completed in March and submitted to Unisa management on May 12, 2023. The report recommends that Unisa’s senate thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding JJ Tabane’s professorship and take appropriate action to rectify any irregularities.

JJ Tabane is widely recognized as one of South Africa’s prominent media personalities. Throughout his career, the accomplished broadcast journalist and entrepreneur have interviewed political and non-political leaders, garnering a loyal following who appreciate his composed and collected demeanor on air.

While the specific details of the concerns surrounding JJ Tabane’s professorship have not been disclosed, the call for an investigation raises important questions about academic integrity and the credibility of qualifications within the media industry. It underscores the need for transparency and adherence to stringent standards when awarding academic titles and positions.

As the controversy unfolds, it is crucial for Unisa to address the allegations and conduct a thorough examination into the circumstances surrounding JJ Tabane’s professorship. By doing so, the university can demonstrate its commitment to upholding academic standards and ensure the integrity of its faculty.

It is important to note that until the investigation is concluded and any findings are made public, the allegations remain unverified, and Dr JJ Tabane should be afforded the presumption of innocence. The controversy serves as a reminder of the significance of maintaining ethical practices within the academic sphere and upholding the reputation of educational institutions.
