Former president Jacob Zuma’s political future is once again at stake as the ANC engages in serious negotiations with its allies to disband the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco). This move has sparked outrage within the KwaZulu-Natal structure of Sanco, which is under Zuma’s leadership.
According to the leaders of Sanco, this is a deliberate smear campaign aimed at embarrassing Zuma shortly after his election as the provincial chair.
Scrolla.Africa have revealed that the ANC secretary general convened a meeting at Luthuli House, scheduled for Monday, to finalize the decision to disband all provincial structures of Sanco and rebuild them in preparation for the 2024 general elections. The origins of this move can be traced back to the Gauteng leaders, who accused the KZN branch of turning Sanco into a retirement haven for Zuma and his family. According to inside sources, a decision is expected to be made on Thursday this week.
While the KZN leaders are willing to accept the decision to disband Sanco, they are determined to establish a new structure that includes Zuma. They believe that Zuma is still needed in KZN and that they must shield him from the humiliation they perceive others want to inflict upon him. However, the meeting that was supposed to take place on Monday was canceled after the national leadership instructed its structures to boycott it.
In response, Sanco’s national leadership issued a statement expressing their discontent. They emphasized their desire to address issues such as the ANC’s imposition of councillors without considering community concerns and other relevant matters. They decided to withdraw from the meeting, citing the ANC’s disregard for their concerns and undermining of Sanco. Meanwhile, attempts to reach the KZN Sanco spokesperson, Nomcebo Msomi, and secretary, Richard Mkhungo, for comment were unsuccessful as their cell phones were on voicemail.
The future of Sanco and its connection to Zuma’s political career remains uncertain, with the ANC’s decision looming and tensions within the organization reaching a boiling point.
