Within the week, Andre De Ruyter, former CEO of South Africa’s power utility Eskom, virtually appeared before the SCOPA committee in the Parliament of South Africa. He shared more information on the accusations he made before he was fired in February 2023.

De Ruyter’s appearance before the SCOPA committee came after he was fired from Eskom, the state-owned power utility, in February 2023. During his testimony, De Ruyter provided more information about the allegations he made before his dismissal. He stated that he had given the name of a senior politician implicated in corruption to key figures in the government, but nothing was done about it.

According to De Ruyter, he had identified other individuals who were allegedly involved in criminal activities at Eskom. Despite sharing this information with high-ranking officials, no action was taken to address the situation. This testimony has raised concerns about corruption within Eskom and South Africa’s government. People are questioning why no action was taken to address the accusations made by De Ruyter, and what steps will be taken to address the situation moving forward.

According to De Ruyter, he reported the identity of a high-ranking politician and individuals allegedly involved in criminal activities at Eskom to Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, and President Cyril Ramaphosa’s national security adviser, Sydney Mufamadi. Despite this, no action was taken.

De Ruyter’s testimony has raised questions about the government’s commitment to rooting out corruption. Critics have accused the government of turning a blind eye to corruption and protecting those implicated in wrongdoing. The lack of action on the information provided by De Ruyter suggests a worrying trend of impunity and a failure to hold those in power accountable for their actions.
