The newly-appointed Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has dropped a bombshell on South African this Friday morning. Despite President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that Ramokgopa will focus on solving the country’s power crisis, the minister has come out to say he plans to stay out of politics and see himself solely as a portfolio manager.
According to Ramokgopa, his attention is on the details and that he is only concerned about the plant level of energy production. However, this approach completely ignores the larger issues at hand, including the current load-shedding crisis. His assertion that the appointment of an electricity minister alone will not resolve load-shedding is a weak excuse for his lack of concrete plans to address the problem. It is clear that Ramokgopa is not prepared to take on the necessary actions to resolve the power crisis.
His comments about being an engineer and having a greater appetite for technically complex problems are merely empty boasts. In reality, his lack of experience in managing the electricity sector is a cause for concern, and his reliance on a collective of players to solve the issue is worrying. Eskom’s problems are political and can only be solved with politics.
Cyril Ramaphosa has one again made a bad decision that will drown South Africans. The public needs a minister who is willing to take direct and decisive action, rather than one who is making excuses and offering nothing but empty promises. This cabinet reshuffle was just a means to settle the internal battle with the ANC and has nothing to do with helping South Africans. We’ve all been played again.
