In the course of an Ad Hoc Committee hearing that took place in Parliament on Tuesday, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema posed a pointed and unrelenting line of inquiry to North West businessman Brown Mogotsi. This served to heighten the scrutiny that was being directed toward Mogotsi’s previous testimony and the allegations that he had political connections.

The acrimonious exchange took place in front of members of the multiparty committee that was entrusted with investigating issues pertaining to governance and accountability. Mogotsi was questioned by Malema on the inconsistencies that he had made in his answers, particularly with regard to his encounters with senior political figures and law enforcement authorities.

There were claims that Mogotsi had falsified portions of his involvement in politically sensitive subjects, and these charges were at the core of Malema’s inquiry. Accusing Mogotsi of seeking to mislead the committee, the leader of the EFF issued a challenge to Mogotsi, demanding that he clarify any discrepancies that exist between his current evidence and previous statements that he had made under oath.

Malema stated in a forceful manner, “You cannot expect this committee to accept shifting versions of events,” and he insisted that Parliament deserved complete transparency throughout the process. His reliability was further called into question, and he enquired as to whether Mogotsi’s activities were driven by political allegiance or personal interest.

After having previously admitted to campaigning during the African National Congress’s 2017 CR17 campaign, Mogotsi maintained that his participation was voluntary and denied any inappropriate conduct. He also claimed that he had engaged in any improper behaviour. Reiterating that he had no aim of misleading Parliament, he stressed that any contradictions were inadvertent and that he had no purpose of doing so.

Mogotsi was frequently asked by Malema to offer clear answers to specific questions regarding communications, meetings, and alleged influence over certain processes. However, Malema remained unconvinced and continued to query about these topics. A further question that the leader of the EFF wanted answered was whether or not Mogotsi had benefited in any manner from his political connections.

As the discussion became more heated, members of the committee periodically became involved in order to maintain order. There were multiple occasions when the chairperson admonished both parties to keep their attention on the task at hand and to follow the established procedures.

According to political observers who were present throughout the sessions, Malema’s vigorous questioning is reflective of broader opposition concerns regarding accountability and transparency in issues involving powerful individuals. A strong emphasis was placed during the meeting on the committee’s responsibility to ascertain the facts and determine whether or not any wrongdoing took place.

During the hearing, MPs in Cape Town continue to investigate claims that have garnered national attention. This is part of the ongoing parliamentary oversight operations that are taking place in Cape Town. There is a possibility that the committee will have further sessions as it continues to receive testimony from new witnesses.

During the adjournment of the hearings, it was made abundantly apparent that Mogotsi’s evidence will continue to be subjected to intense scrutiny. Malema made it clear that he intends to pursue what he referred to as “the full truth” until the committee completes its job.
