MK Party MP Sibonelo Nomvalo Accuses Ad Hoc Committee Of Giving Cat Matlala Special Treatment

MK Party MP Sibonelo Nomvalo expressed strong objections during a committee meeting, stating that the treatment of Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala by the #ADHOCcommittee was unfair in comparison to other witnesses. He emphasized that proceedings should not have continued without Matlala’s statement being signed or commissioned by a commissioner of oath, which he deemed a significant issue.

Nomvalo highlighted that all witnesses are expected to adhere to strict procedures, including providing a signed and properly commissioned statement before testifying. He argued that this standard should remain consistent and not be altered for anyone. Allowing Matlala to testify without a commissioned statement appeared to him as favoritism, which could tarnish the perceived fairness of the inquiry and potentially erode public confidence in the committee if some individuals were perceived as receiving exceptions.

He expressed disappointment that the committee did not take a break to address this issue before allowing Matlala to proceed, questioning the committee’s willingness to deviate from its own rules. He warned that this could create a precedent where other witnesses might expect similar leniency, leading to confusion and disruption in future hearings.

Nomvalo’s remarks came at a time when the committee was already in the public spotlight, and he stressed the importance of treating all witnesses equally. He underscored that proper procedures should never be overlooked, especially in cases involving serious allegations and prominent figures. He maintained that every document must be valid, all statements must be properly prepared, and everyone should be held to the same standards.

By raising this concern, Nomvalo aimed to emphasize that the committee should function with integrity, transparency, and fairness. His focus was not solely on Matlala’s statement, but on preserving the integrity of the entire inquiry process. He insisted that rules must apply to everyone without exceptions during the proceedings.
