Orlando Pirates have reached an agreement to transfer defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi to Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire for a reported R51 million. The 20-year-old has traveled to the United States to complete the move.
Mbokazi emerged as a first-team regular for Pirates last season under coach Jose Riveiro, quickly attracting international attention. The transfer is scheduled to be finalized after the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament, where Mbokazi is expected to feature for South Africa’s national team.
The young defender becomes the latest South African player to move to MLS, following recent transfers of players like Olwethu Makhanya and Njabulo Blom. Mbokazi will continue to play for Pirates in domestic competitions until his departure.
