Senior ANC figures Mathews Phosa and Mbhazima Shilowa have publicly called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to dismiss suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. The call comes amid ongoing revelations at the Madlanga Commission, where Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has testified about alleged political interference in policing.
Phosa, in a television interview, stated the president must act immediately to remove Mchunu to restore integrity. Shilowa, in a published opinion piece, argued that in functional democracies, officials facing such serious allegations would resign to preserve public trust.
The pressure mounts as a parliamentary committee investigates broader corruption within the criminal justice system. The allegations include the deliberate dismantling of specialized units designed to combat political assassinations.
President Ramaphosa now faces a critical decision on Mchunu’s future as public concern over crime and institutional integrity continues to grow.
