Minister Senzo Mchunu Under Fire Over Missing Audio Recording Alleging Threats by General Mkhwanazi

Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is facing mounting scrutiny after failing to provide the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee with an audio recording he previously claimed contained threats from Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The committee is investigating allegations of corruption and political interference within the criminal justice system.

During his testimony, Minister Mchunu asserted that he had instructed his chief of staff, Cedric Nkabinde, to record all conversations with General Mkhwanazi following an alleged threat. Mchunu stated that the recording would serve as evidence of the threat. However, when pressed by committee members, Mchunu admitted that he had not personally listened to the recording and was under the impression that the specific part containing the alleged threat had been recorded. He clarified that the recording was not available but was only referenced in relation to the alleged threat.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema criticized Minister Mchunu for presenting a recording he had not reviewed himself. Malema argued that the minister had promised to provide the recording, but as it stands, the recording does not exist, undermining the credibility of the minister’s claims.

The committee’s proceedings have highlighted concerns over the handling of evidence and the integrity of the investigation. The absence of the promised audio recording raises questions about the veracity of the allegations and the potential for political interference in the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). The committee is expected to continue its inquiry, seeking clarity on the events surrounding the alleged threats and the subsequent actions taken by Minister Mchunu.
