ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has confirmed that he was approached by associates of businessman Patrice Motsepe following comments he made about Motsepe’s possible political ambitions.
Speaking at the ANC Mpumalanga Provincial General Council (PGC) in Mbombela, Mbalula said his remarks were not intended as an attack on Motsepe. He explained that he was merely cautioning against speculation over future ANC leadership.
“I was approached by people close to Motsepe. I want to make it clear that I’m not fighting him,” Mbalula said. “If my comments offended anyone, I apologise.”
Mbalula had previously questioned whether Motsepe was an active ANC branch member, saying leadership within the party should emerge through proper organisational structures, not influence or wealth.
He has since emphasised that his comments were taken out of context and that Motsepe remains “a respected patriot and philanthropist.”
