Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has admitted that he did not consult before making the decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
Testifying to Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing political interference & corruption within the criminal justice system, Mchunu conceded that the move was unilateral. He said the decision was made in what he believed was the “best interest of restructuring police priorities,”
The PKTT was established to investigate politically motivated murders, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, where such crimes have remained a persistent issue.
National Police Commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola has since been accused by Mchunu of withholding key information about the team’s operations prior to its dissolution.
