Fikile Mbalula, the secretary-general of the African National Congress (ANC), has defended himself against what he called “malicious attempts” to damage his reputation, stating that he cannot stand by and watch while his integrity is publicly questioned.
Mbalula responded to mounting criticism of his leadership role in the ANC and his involvement in internal conflicts during a media briefing on Wednesday. He emphasised that his response was motivated by principle rather than conceit.
When my reputation is being tarnished, I must take a position. People will see my silence as an admission of guilt if I remain silent. I owe it to the movement I support, my family, and myself to make things clear,” he stated.
The comments coincide with increased political tensions inside the ANC, where senior officials are being scrutinised due to disagreements about coalition tactics and policy direction. Mbalula declared that his contribution to the party would not be overshadowed by “falsehoods and political agendas.”
“Being a leader is not simple. Even when you make choices that not everyone will agree with, you have to stand by them. I refuse to be intimidated by efforts to undermine me.
My record is self-evident,” he continued. The very vocal Mbalula admitted that his leadership style has drawn both praise and criticism. But he maintained that the ANC’s credibility and keeping its pledges to South Africans should continue to be the major priorities.
“This nation’s citizens are keeping an eye on us. They are looking for solutions, answers, and moral leadership. My attention is on it, not on trivial diversions,” he declared.
Political observers point out that Mbalula’s most recent remarks demonstrate the escalating strain on the ANC leadership, especially as the party prepares for the upcoming election cycle.
His insistence on preserving his reputation highlights the fine line that leaders must draw between their own moral character and group accountability.
For the time being, Mbalula insists he would keep speaking out whenever his name is associated with accusations he believes are baseless. He declared, “Although I have never shied away from accountability, I will not let lies define me.”
