Actress and media personality Pearl Thusi has opened up about a frightening encounter she had with convicted criminal Thabo Bester, revealing how she narrowly avoided becoming one of his early victims. Her story is featured in the newly released Netflix documentary, Beauty and the Bester. The incident took place back in 2011, when Bester reached out to Thusi on Facebook, offering what appeared to be a legitimate job opportunity.
He claimed he was casting for a new television show and wanted her as the host — a seemingly genuine proposal at the time. Thusi agreed to meet him in Johannesburg, but things took a dark turn when she got into a car with Bester. She soon realized they were heading towards a remote area near Sandton City.
“When I turned to look at him, the knife was already out,” she recalled, describing the terrifying moment she realized she was in danger. Instead of reacting with fear, Thusi said her Christian faith guided her response. “As a young Christian woman, I genuinely thought I was helping someone,” she said. In a surprising twist, she urged Bester to seek spiritual guidance, eventually taking him to her pastor, where he reportedly broke down and confessed.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do it. I don’t know what came over me,” he allegedly said as they prayed together. Thusi’s involvement ended when she flagged down a police van, asking the officers to take Bester in. That was the last time she ever saw him. Reflecting on the incident, she admitted it left her feeling shaken and naive: “I’d never felt so stupid.”
The documentary places Thusi’s story within the broader context of Bester’s manipulative schemes, revealing how he targeted celebrities and influencers, using charm and deceit to lure his victims.
Through personal accounts, Beauty and the Bester uncovers the psychological abuse and emotional trauma left in his wake. Thusi’s deeply personal testimony brings a powerful emotional depth to the series, offering a stark warning and shedding light on the vulnerabilities even public figures face when dealing with predatory individuals. Beauty and the Bester is currently streaming on Netflix.
