No More Excuses: Ramaphosa Warns North West Leaders Over Collapse of Governance

President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a powerful rebuke to the North West provincial executive on Friday, asserting unequivocally that no circumstance justifies poor governance or maladministration. Speaking at a high-level meeting between the national executive committee and the North West executive council (exco) in Rustenburg, Ramaphosa laid bare his frustration with the province’s ongoing governance failures and warned of increased accountability measures.

The President’s remarks come amid growing public dissatisfaction in the North West, where citizens continue to grapple with inadequate service delivery, stalled infrastructure projects, and a health system under severe strain. Ramaphosa’s address marks a clear message that excuses will no longer be tolerated in the face of persistent mismanagement.

Highlighting Governance Failures

During the meeting, Ramaphosa did not mince words, condemning the chronic issues plaguing the province’s administration. He pointed to dysfunctional local municipalities and repeated instances where public resources have been mismanaged or outright wasted, further aggravating service delivery backlogs. “Nothing can excuse poor governance and maladministration,” the President said firmly, stressing that government officials must take responsibility for their failures.

The North West has long been mired in controversy over governance issues, with multiple reports detailing corruption, inefficiency, and lack of oversight at various levels. Infrastructure projects meant to improve roads, schools, and clinics have either stalled or been abandoned, leaving communities without basic amenities. Meanwhile, hospitals and clinics in the province have been reported to suffer from shortages of essential medicines and personnel, contributing to a health crisis.

Ramaphosa’s intervention underscores the urgent need for corrective action, as he urged provincial leaders to step up and address these challenges without delay.

Accountability and Oversight

The President’s stern stance signals an intention from the national government to exercise closer oversight over the North West provincial administration. By publicly holding the executive council to account, Ramaphosa is laying the groundwork for stronger performance monitoring and, potentially, disciplinary measures against those who continue to falter.

“Citizens deserve better,” Ramaphosa stated, reinforcing the principle that public officials serve the people and must be answerable to them. The emphasis on accountability reflects a broader drive within the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to tackle corruption and inefficiency, which have been major stumbling blocks to development in many provinces.

Observers note that Ramaphosa’s words come at a critical juncture for the ANC as it prepares for upcoming elections, seeking to restore public trust by addressing governance shortcomings head-on.

Public Reaction and Implications

The speech has been met with a mixture of cautious optimism and skepticism among North West residents. Many have expressed relief that the President is acknowledging their frustrations publicly, hoping that this will translate into tangible improvements. However, there remains wariness given the province’s long history of unfulfilled promises and entrenched political patronage networks.

Civil society groups have called for more transparency in how provincial funds are managed and have urged the government to implement systemic reforms rather than temporary fixes. They emphasize that without structural changes, the cycle of poor governance and maladministration will persist.

Analysts suggest that Ramaphosa’s intervention could also lead to a shake-up within the North West executive council, as underperforming officials face increased scrutiny. The President’s call for no tolerance of maladministration sets a precedent that could influence governance standards across other provinces as well.
