South Africa’s Judiciary Demands Proof from Police Chief Over Corruption Claims

The Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) has formally challenged KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, to provide evidence for his claim that judges in Gauteng are colluding with drug syndicates.

The demand comes after Mkhwanazi made the explosive allegation during a media briefing on July 6th. In a sharp statement, the OCJ expressed serious concern, warning that such public claims without proof can severely damage public trust in the courts.

The judiciary’s statement made it clear that if Mkhwanazi has any credible evidence of misconduct, he must immediately submit it to the proper authorities, such as the Judicial Service Commission. These are the only bodies legally empowered to investigate judges.

“This is not enough to make public allegations. There are established channels to deal with any misconduct within the judiciary,” the OCJ stated.

These allegations arrive at a time of high tension between law enforcement and the political establishment. Mkhwanazi has recently also accused senior politicians of interfering with police investigations in KwaZulu-Natal.

While some groups have praised the police commissioner for speaking out, others insist that claims of this gravity require solid evidence. Legal analysts warn that if he fails to provide proof, it could severely damage his credibility and that of the police service.

The judiciary has reaffirmed it will act decisively if any wrongdoing is proven. The nation now waits to see if Commissioner Mkhwanazi can back his serious allegations with hard evidence.
