Jacob Zuma and MK Party Challenge Ramaphosa’s Decisions in Court

MK Party Formally Charges Floyd Shivambu with Internal Sabotage and Abuse of Power

Former President Jacob Zuma and his uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party are in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria today. They are challenging several key decisions made by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The legal challenge focuses on three actions taken by the president:
1. Placing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave.
2. Appointing Professor Firoz Cachalia as the acting Minister of Police.
3. Establishing the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to investigate the police service.

Zuma and the MK Party argue that these decisions were unconstitutional and an overreach of the president’s power. They claim Minister Mchunu’s suspension was done without good reason and that the appointment of Professor Cachalia, a legal expert, was politically motivated. They also argue the new commission is a waste of public money and duplicates work already done by other oversight bodies.

The Presidency has defended the moves, stating that President Ramaphosa acted within his constitutional rights to ensure stability and accountability in the police ministry.

Political analysts see this case as part of a larger power struggle between Zuma’s faction and the current administration. The outcome of the case could set an important precedent regarding the limits of presidential power.

The court hearing is drawing significant attention, and a judgment may be delivered at a later date.
