Former minister and current ANC MP Malusi Gigaba has publicly accused the African National Congress of extensive vote-buying in its internal elections since 2017.
In an interview, Gigaba claimed that financial influence, rather than ideology or merit, now determines who wins leadership positions within the party. He described this practice as a major threat to the ANC’s stated goals of reforming and renewing itself, arguing it allows wealthy individuals to buy power.
Gigaba called on the ANC Youth League to address the issue to protect the party’s original principles.
The ANC responded forcefully, condemning Gigaba’s comments as a serious breach of internal communication rules. The party accused him and fellow MP Senzo Mchunu of damaging its unity and credibility and announced that disciplinary action has been initiated against both for their public criticisms, which it labeled an “opportunistic assault.”
