Alleged Plot to Remove KZN Police Chief Sparks Concerns Over Political Interference

Political commentator JJ Tabane has revealed concerning claims about a potential campaign to oust KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi from his position. Speaking on his current affairs show, Tabane cited unnamed sources suggesting figures close to President Ramaphosa may be driving the effort, allegedly due to Mkhwanazi’s uncompromising leadership style.

The respected police chief has built a reputation for tackling organized crime and corruption head-on, a stance that analysts say may have drawn political discomfort. Security expert Themba Maseko warned that any move against Mkhwanazi would likely be seen as political meddling, given his strong track record in combating criminal networks.

While the Presidency and SAPS have declined to comment, civil society groups like OUTA are calling for transparency, stressing that police leadership decisions must remain merit-based. The allegations have reignited debates about political influence over law enforcement, particularly as Mkhwanazi continues overseeing critical crime prevention operations in the volatile province.

As speculation grows, observers are watching closely to see whether these claims develop into a formal challenge to one of South Africa’s most prominent police leaders.
