Contractor Have Exposed ANC Officials Who Looted The R151 Million Meant For Water Project In Jozini

Explosive revelations have emerged from Jozini where a failed water scheme meant to serve 2,400 households only reached 700 families before collapsing. The contractor’s sworn statement claims significant portions of project funds were funneled to ANC officials in the Nokuhamba Nyawo region rather than being used for construction.

Investigations uncovered R6.7 million in overpayments to the contractor between February and November 2021 – a period coinciding with former mayor Solomon Mkhombo’s departure. The uMkhanyakude District Municipality has initiated legal proceedings to recover the misused funds while attempting to complete the long-stalled project.

Provincial COGTA MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi confirmed ongoing forensic investigations, promising accountability for all implicated officials. The assurance comes amid growing public outrage, including EFF-led protests demanding full disclosure of the forensic report.

“The suspension of officials is just the first step,” said EFF provincial chair Mongezi Thwala. “We need complete transparency about how political interference and bribery demands sabotaged this vital service.”

While municipal authorities claim the project is 90% complete, frustrated residents continue waiting for reliable water access. The scandal highlights how financial mismanagement and alleged political patronage have deprived communities of basic services, leaving thousands without the clean water they were promised.

As legal processes unfold, the case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences when development funds become political slush funds rather than serving their intended purpose. The municipality now faces the dual challenge of recovering stolen money while finally delivering on its water provision promises.
