Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has firmly denied any connection between himself—or his wife, Mantwa Matlala—and controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Malema labelled the speculation as “petty gossip,” urging the media to focus on more important national issues.
The controversy began after images circulated on social media, allegedly showing Malema’s wife using CAT VIP Protection services, which are linked to Matlala. The photos were shared by a Facebook user named Kagiso Monyadiwa, who has no confirmed ties to any news outlet.
Speaking during a by-election campaign in Polokwane, Malema dismissed the rumours outright.
“He must go rot in jail. I don’t know him, I don’t even care about him. I’ve never had anything to do with him,” said Malema. “So, you [the media] take petty gossip and come ask me about it? There are serious national issues you must ask me about.”
Matlala, the businessman at the centre of the allegations, is currently facing multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering. He is accused of being involved in a shootout in October 2023 involving actress Tebogo Thobejane and has appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. Authorities also discovered a cellphone in his possession while in custody at Kgosi Mampuru C-Max Prison.
Malema’s strong reaction highlights his frustration with being dragged into the controversy. He reiterated that neither he nor his wife has any connection to Matlala and criticised the media for amplifying social media speculation.
As online debate continues, Malema’s firm denial seeks to put the matter to rest and shift attention back to national concerns.
