Pyramids FC have been crowned the new champions of Africa after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday.

The first leg had ended in a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld the previous week, setting up a tense decider. Pyramids completed the job with a composed performance on home soil.

Fiston Mayele, a reported target for Kaizer Chiefs, opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, while teammate Ahmed Sammy added a second in the 56th minute. Iqraam Rayners pulled one back for Sundowns in the 75th minute, but it proved only a consolation as Pyramids held on for a 3-2 aggregate victory.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the historic achievement, stating: “Pyramids FC claimed their first-ever TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title with a 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in an intense second-leg final. After a 1-1 draw in Pretoria, the Egyptian side secured a 3-2 aggregate triumph, becoming the fourth different club from Egypt to lift the trophy—joining Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily in a record unmatched by any other nation.”

Pyramids started strongly in front of a vocal home crowd, taking the lead when Mayele fired a low shot into the far corner following a well-worked move on the right. The goal was his ninth in the competition, cementing his role as a pivotal figure in the team’s success.

The hosts extended their advantage early in the second half when Sammy powered in a header from a Mohamed Chibi cross in the 56th minute, sending the home supporters into wild celebrations. Despite Rayners’ late strike, Pyramids held firm to claim the continent’s most prestigious club honor.
