Internal Divisions Threaten uMkhonto weSizwe Party as Calls Grow to Remove Floyd Shivambu

Tensions are escalating within the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) as internal factions push for the removal of Floyd Shivambu from his leadership role. Party insiders reveal that senior members are advocating for a broader restructuring of the top leadership, with a rebellious movement gaining momentum.

Shivambu, who recently joined the MKP after his high-profile exit from the EFF, was initially seen as a strategic addition. However, long-standing members have grown discontent with his swift rise, accusing him of sidelining key founding figures and centralizing power too quickly.

At the heart of the dissent is the perception that Shivambu dominates decision-making without consulting crucial stakeholders. “We cannot allow one person to steer the party unilaterally,” said a senior MKP official who requested anonymity. “This is a collective movement, not a one-man show.”

The growing dissatisfaction has reportedly prompted MKP leader Jacob Zuma to consider an emergency national leadership meeting. Sources indicate that several provincial leaders are pressuring Zuma to either remove or reassign Shivambu as part of a wider leadership overhaul.

Despite internal pressure, Shivambu has publicly dismissed the turmoil, framing it as a distraction ahead of local elections. During a recent address to supporters in KwaZulu-Natal, he dismissed reports of infighting as “diversionary tactics” aimed at weakening the party. “Our priority should be grassroots mobilization, not internal squabbles,” he asserted.

Analysts warn that the MKP’s unity is at risk if the conflict remains unresolved. Political analyst Thobani Zulu noted that Zuma faces one of his most significant leadership challenges since the party’s inception. “His next move could define the MKP’s future,” Zulu said.

With speculation of an impending leadership shake-up intensifying, all eyes are on Zuma. The critical question remains whether he will stand by Shivambu or yield to mounting internal pressure. For now, the MKP appears to be navigating turbulent waters of its own making.
