Leadership Contest Emerges Within ANC Ahead of 2027 Conference, with Limpopo as Key Battleground

The African National Congress (ANC) is already seeing internal leadership struggles behind the scenes as it prepares for its next elective conference in 2027. Limpopo has become a critical arena in the party’s ongoing power dynamics.

Although the national elective conference is still two years away, discussions, strategic alliances, and behind-the-scenes lobbying efforts are already underway within the province’s party structures. Historically, Limpopo has played a significant role in shaping ANC leadership contests, thanks to its strong organizational base and highly committed membership.

Sources close to provincial structures reveal that key factions are quietly rallying behind potential candidates, even as the party’s leadership publicly calls for unity and service delivery. Current discussions center on succession planning, leadership renewal, and whether the ANC will favor experienced senior figures or push for generational change.

A senior ANC member from the Mopani region, speaking anonymously, said, “There is definitely movement beneath the surface, even though no formal campaigns have been launched yet. Meetings are happening, connections are being made, and groundwork is being laid for future endorsements.”

As 2027 approaches, provincial chairperson Stan Mathabatha—a prominent figure in Limpopo politics—is expected to play a major role in shaping the province’s stance. It remains unclear whether he will back a national candidate or seek greater influence within the ANC’s national executive.

Political analysts suggest that Limpopo’s influence in the leadership race will depend on its ability to present a united front. Dr. Thabiso Molekwa, a political analyst, noted, “The province is strategically and numerically significant. If regional structures avoid fragmentation, Limpopo could once again be a kingmaker.”

National leaders are closely monitoring the situation, wary of early campaigning that could deepen party divisions. The ANC has repeatedly cautioned against excessive lobbying, warning of the risks of factionalism and distractions from governance.

While leadership ambitions remain subdued for now, Limpopo is set to become a decisive battleground in the ANC’s succession contest. The behind-the-scenes maneuvering in the province could shape not only the party’s future but also the trajectory of national politics in the coming years.
