Radio personality and actress Zola Mhlongo made a striking fashion statement at the 2025 Metro FM Music Awards in Mbombela, captivating the audience and social media alike with a custom black lace gown designed by AFI Atelier.

The couture gown featured delicate vine embroidery, a plunging illusion neckline, and a ruched skirt that highlighted Mhlongo’s silhouette. Designed by Loice Dube and her team, the garment was tailored specifically to reflect Zola’s confidence and personal style. Though weeks were spent conceptualising the look, the final stitching and detailing were completed the night before the event.

Mhlongo’s reaction upon seeing the completed dress—described by her team as “a scream of pure joy”—underscored the emotional investment behind the piece.

The dress, unveiled earlier at the Nominees Announcement in Sandton on February 27, drew widespread attention again on May 3 when she stepped onto the red carpet. Fans and fashion commentators on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram hailed her as one of the evening’s best-dressed figures.

The vine motif and craftsmanship sparked broader conversation among style bloggers and fashion critics, with many noting how the look seamlessly blended African couture artistry with contemporary elegance.

While the awards celebrated the achievements of South Africa’s music industry, Zola Mhlongo’s fashion moment was among the most talked-about highlights of the night.
