Belfast Mourns as Woman Allegedly Killed by Estranged Husband, a Police Officer

The community of Belfast is in mourning after the tragic death of 35-year-old Rebecca Mthimunye, who was allegedly shot and killed by her estranged husband—a man reported to be a police officer.

The incident occurred on Monday when the suspect allegedly confronted Mthimunye at her home and opened fire, fatally wounding her in front of witnesses. Emergency responders arrived but pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police have confirmed the arrest of the suspect, who has not yet been named pending a court appearance. He is expected to face murder charges, with early investigations suggesting domestic violence as the motive.

Mthimunye’s death has sparked widespread grief and anger on social media, where friends and family remembered her as a loving mother and a pillar of her community. Tributes flooded in, with many posting messages like “Rest in Power” alongside broken heart emojis.

“This wasn’t just a killing—it was a betrayal by someone sworn to protect,” said a distraught family member. “She lived in fear, and now our worst fears have come true.”

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is closely monitoring the case due to the suspect’s law enforcement ties. Gender-based violence activists have renewed calls for justice and stronger protections for women, particularly those vulnerable to abuse by partners in positions of power.

As Belfast prepares to lay Rebecca Mthimunye to rest, her death underscores South Africa’s ongoing struggle with femicide and intimate partner violence.
